The full list of panels and speakers for the Urban Weird conference is now available!
Open Graves, Open Minds & Supernatural Cities present: The Urban Weird is a two-day conference hosted by the University of Hertfordshire on the 6 and 7 April 2018. The fifteen panels will cover topics ranging from ‘Urban Myths and Mobility’ and ‘Weird Victoriana’ to ‘Killers of London’ and ‘the Neoliberal Weird’.
Keynote Speakers and Special Events
Three speakers will deliver keynotes as part of the conference:
Prof. Owen Davies (University of Hertfordshire), historian of witchcraft and magic,
‘Supernatural Beliefs in Nineteenth-Century Asylums’
Dr Karl Bell (University of Portsmouth), Convenor of Supernatural Cities, ‘Dark City, Daemonic Architectures: Towards a Cartography of the Urban Weird’
Dr Sam George (University of Hertfordshire), Convenor of the Open Graves, Open Minds Project, ‘City Demons: Urban Manifestations of the Pied Piper and Nosferatu Myths’
There will also be a series of special events, all free to conference delegates:
- Urban Weird Film Screening: A mystery film selected and introduced by Adam Scovell, BFI critic and folk horror film specialist
- Spectral St Albans Magical City Tour: explore the magical and supernatural history of Hertfordshire’s finest spectral city
- Urban Weird Boggart Workshop: a special workshop led by Ceri Houlbrook (ECR, University of Hertfordshire) using a wide range of material to trace the history and folklore of Boggart Hole Clough
